Six years ago this month, some of the business owners along Fayetteville’s Block Avenue decided to host a little celebration on their street.
The city of Fayetteville had just finished a long street construction project on the avenue, and the businesses were in need of a little celebration, and in some instances, a shot in the arm after several months of dealing with the challenges associated with the construction.
That spring, on a Sunday in late May, the first ever Block Street Block Party was born. Several thousand people showed up to that inaugural party, and it has grown every year since to become one of the most anticipated events of the year every year in Fayetteville.
The sixth annual block party was held last weekend on Sunday, May 23, and organizers say this year’s event was the largest to date.
Over 40 local bands performed on five stages, and over 150 local arts, crafts, food, and non-profit vendors set up along the street selling their wares and hosting activites.
There was local beer, a zip line, a baby goat petting area, an animated gif station, bouncy slides for the kids, Fayetteville’s first ever “high heel race” to benefit a new women’s shelter, and tons of other attractions.
Attendees turned out in droves as well. In all, organizers estimate more than 13,000 people attended this year’s festival.
