The only thing runners like more than, well, running and talking about running is beer. The only thing Arkansans are better at doing than raising awareness and funds for a good cause is creating a way to do both. The ALS in Wonderland Foundation has accomplished all of this with Arkansas’s only ALE Run.
At 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, the second annual Arkansas ALE Run will feature hundreds of runners, four beers, one mile and a big party to raise funds and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Anyone can participate – runners, walkers, rollers, drinkers, adults and kids. Those over 21 who choose to drink alcohol must consume four cans of beer and run four laps around Pleasant Ridge Shopping Center.
It goes like this: start – beer; run a lap; drink a beer; run another lap; drink another beer; run the final lap and finish. Those who don’t want to drink alcohol or are under 21 can choose root beer between laps, then everyone gets to celebrate at the after-party, which features live music, gourmet food, games for everyone and people coming together to combat ALS.
Also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, ALS affects about 6,000 people throughout the nation each year. Arkansas’s ALS in Wonderland Foundation creates awareness, educates and provides funding directly for the benefit of patients with ALS (PALS) in the state.
“My father had ALS, and I wanted to help families with financial needs that arise from the disease,” said Lara Blume McGee, founder of ALS in Wonderland. “We also act as a reliable advocate for our PALS. It is essential for the ALS patient and their caregivers to understand this disease and its physical, emotional, mental and financial implications. Through fundraisers like the Arkansas ALE Run, we’re able to ensure 100 percent of donations stay in Arkansas and help Arkansans and their families with ALS.”
