Sisters Sweeten Up the Food Truck Scene

R

Ready for the Movies in the Park crowd, Brown Sugar Bakeshop’s dessert food truck was parked along Riverfront Park. The delicious smells drew me in like a Siren, and I wasn’t the only one. They had just opened and people started to line up for cupcakes, cookies and the Williams sisters’ famous blondies.

Kristi and April Williams started Brown Sugar Bakeshop in 2009 as a way to own their own slice of the business pie and bring a unique, home-style dessert concept to the city where they grew up.

Brown Sugar Bakeshop’s food truck is usually open somewhere around Little Rock weekdays and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. They also attend food truck pop-ups and are available for events that are outside of those hours.  In addition, they cater special events specializing in dessert tables, breakfast/brunch platters, and pie bars.

When asked what surprises her most about running her own business, Kristi says, “The amount of hats you must wear. There are days you’re a baker, tech support, accountant and driver all by noon.”

Brown Sugar Bakeshop had a storefront location but recently moved to a mobile-only business. Since they still have the luxury of their own full-service, commercially-equipped kitchen that also serves as their home-base, they don’t feel like they have moved completely away from brick and mortar. Kristi says that operating the business as a food truck has been fun and challenging. And it gives them the added flexibility of mobility.

After Kristi and April’s seven year anniversary this past March, they were ready to switch things up. So they decided to focus on dessert delivery, dessert catering and dessert mobile services (food truck, food bike). “There isn’t any place else in Arkansas offering this level of attention on just sweets and with our branding, dedication to fresh, gourmet treats, and desire for sustainable growth for years to come, it was the right move at the right time. Oh, and shipping nationwide will be our next goal!” says Kristi.
