It is the first weekend of the New Year and there are several interesting literary, musical, film and other events happening around the state. There are several great options to keep the kids busy while they read, learn and play this weekend. Keep them busy and everyone will say happy until school starts back! Happy First Weekend of 2019!
The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical (Fayetteville)
Northwest Arkansas audiences will be the first to see this new musical on tour. After a sold-out engagement off-Broadway in New York City, the company will rehearse and present their first public tour performances of the tour at the Walton Arts Center! This “winning adaptation” (The Hollywood Reporter) of the best-selling Disney-Hyperion novel by Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is “electrifying!” (Newsday). The Greek gods are real, and they’re ruining Percy Jackson’s life. As a son of Poseidon, Percy has newly discovered powers he can’t control, monsters on his trail, and is on an epic quest to find Zeus’ lightning bolt to prevent a war between the gods. Nominated for three Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, The Lightning Thief is “mesmerizing” and proves “lightning can strike twice!” (TheaterMania).

Arkansas Shorts- A Night of Short Film (Hot Springs)
“Arkansas Shorts- A Night of Short Film” is an annual event showcasing short films in three categories: those made by native and current residents of Arkansas; by North American filmmakers; and by international filmmakers. The films, 10 minutes in length or less, are directed by professionals, amateurs, hobbyists and beginners alike. All genres of film are represented including narrative, experimental, documentary, music video, animation, etc.

Mini-Camp: That’s Gross! (Bentonville)
This camp is best for ages 6-11 who want to be a little gross! They will be investigating things like, what makes us burp and testing how far we spread germs, to getting up close and personal with our digestive system. This mini camp will be spent embracing the inner yucky! Put on your rubber gloves and get ready for some science! You must pre-register for this mini-camp.
