In the 1940s and 50s, L.C. and Daisy Bates were prominent figures in the Little Rock African-American community. They published the Arkansas State Press, a weekly statewide newspaper that featured stories on civil rights, including violations to the Supreme Court’s desegregation rulings. In 1957, Daisy Bates championed “the Little Rock Nine” as they enrolled in the all-white Little Rock Central High School. The Bates home became a safe haven for those students. It is listed as a National Historic Landmark and is being restored as a museum.
To honor the contributions of the Bates family, the Christian Ministerial Alliance will hold its 2016 L.C. and Daisy Bates Luncheon Monday, Feb. 15, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Shorter College Morris Center located at 604 N. Locust Street, North Little Rock, Arkansas. The annual luncheon event assists in funding the operations of the Bates Museum National Historical Site.
This year’s fundraising event carries the theme “The Inescapable Nature of Mutuality” and will feature a presentation from Carlton Turner, executive director of Alternate Roots. Alternate ROOTS is a regional, interracial service organization based in Atlanta with 40 years of history focusing on artists and cultural organizers that seeks to champion social and economic justice and the work of people in their local communities.
Alternate Roots “calls for social and economic justice and are working to dismantle all forms of oppression – everywhere.”
The talented Mount Saint Mary Concert Belles will provide the music for the event.
Tickets for the event are $50 each. Sponsorships are also available. Sponsors receive recognition in the program booklet and during announcements at the luncheon, as well as tickets to the event.
