Mushrooms and Jousting and More this Weekend

Can you believe that November is here? Let’s enjoy this beautiful weekend with great events around the state. Enjoy a time-honored gallery stroll or get your fill of mushrooms. There are events on the urban harvest and hydroponic gardening. Take a bike tour or join a beer run. Celebrate the Asian heritage or brush up on your jousting skills for the Renaissance fair. There’s something for everyone this weekend – only in Arkansas.

Gallery Walk – Hot Springs

Experience a continuous tradition of 25 years and counting as galleries stay open late for Gallery Walk on the first Friday of each month. Enjoy openings of new exhibits by local, regional, national and international artists. The Hot Springs Arts District is a unique blending of natural beauty surrounded by a National Historic District. Stroll beautiful downtown Hot Springs and enjoy some of the finest contemporary art in America. Many galleries stay open until 9 p.m. often with music and complimentary refreshments.

Mushroom Mania – Little Rock

Join field mycologist, Jay Justice and other members of the Arkansas Mycological Society for a day of immersion into macrofungi, the largest members of the fifth kingdom. Events include interpretive hikes to observe mushrooms and fungi, opportunities to consume wild mushroom soup, and lectures on edible and poisonous mushrooms!

8th Annual Tour duh Sunken Lands – Tyronza

This biking adventure is a 52-mile cultural tour through the unique Sunken Lands of East Arkansas. Starting at the Southern Tenant Farmer’s Museum in Tyronza, the tour rolls through the fields and swamps left behind by the greatest earthquake in American history and stops at several regional and national museums including the Johnny Cash Boyhood Home. Admission to all attractions is included in the fee, as well as a “warming soup” at the midway point, the John Gresham Painted House in Lepanto, and an Americana style post-ride dinner at Tyboogie’s.

Hydroponic Gardening Workshop at Garvan Woodland Gardens – Hot Springs

Can a person grow tomatoes and strawberries in the winter? With proper lighting, temperature, airflow, and nutrition, you can grow anything you want! Hydroponic gardening is a gardening technique that does not use soil. Participants will discuss the foundational concepts and principles needed to be a successful hydroponic gardener. In addition, Nolen Buffalo, of The Water Buffalo in Little Rock constructs and demonstrates the use of various styles of hydroponic gardens, highlighting how each style might meet the gardener’s needs. The class finishes with a discussion of nutritional needs of the garden and some typical issues that new gardeners face. There will be door prizes! Reservations required.
