TJ’s Sandwich Shop was created after Chef Todd became frustrated that every time he ate out and ordered a sandwich, the sandwiches were always cold. “I’m fixing to change that,” he told his wife.
Residents of Fayetteville may already be familiar with Chef Todd and his close-knit family for the past 25 years or so. From television commercials to billboards along the interstate, Chef Todd and his wife Nikki are truly restaurant royalty.
They would be quick to deny this, truthfully. Their employees are like family members to them, and many have worked at their Fayetteville restaurants, such as Mermaids, Belvederes, Isabella’s, and TJ’s Sandwich Shop, for over twenty years.
One great perk of owning multiple restaurants is opening up opportunities to provide different experiences for your guests.
If you’re in the mood for seafood, have dinner at Chef Todd’s Mermaids in Fayetteville. For those times that Italian would hit the spot for dinner, try out Chef Todd’s Isabella’s in Fayetteville.
For those times when you really just want a hot sandwich, taco, soup, or salad for lunch or dinner, then TJ’s Sandwich Shop hits the spot. Opened seven years in a spot just across the street, TJ’s moved to the new location in the summer of 2021.
TJs Sandwich shop has all the conveniences from inside dining to a drive thru window. If you decide to go inside for a quick bite, you will see that they also offer Diner Dash with signature Chef Todd recipes that you can take to go and delicious pastries.
And there’s one more delicious menu item that everyone must try: Hugs, chef-inspired ice cream that is made in-house.
A quick look at the menu will introduce you to two bread options: regular and steamers. Regular sandwiches are made on a hoagie roll, and steamers are French baguettes spread with Parmesan garlic butter. The hot meat is put in the steamer rolls, and they are wrapped up.
Sandwiches can also be made into salads, and many customers do just that. Everything on the sandwich is the same—including hot—but instead of bread, it goes on lettuce.
The Caveman Club sandwich is pretty popular, as is the Gobbler Steamer, which is pan-seared turkey breast with caramelized onions and spicy cream cheese. It’s delicious!
Chef TJ’s Cheese Steak is another popular sandwich, but this isn’t a regular old Philly. It’s shaved beef with caramelized onions, mushrooms and melty cheese on a toasted hoagie.
Be sure to try the house-made Mac and cheese, which is made from scratch, with a side of house-made tomato basil soup!
And yes, all of this can be ordered through the drive-thru window!
Hugs ice cream is made on premises, and according to co-owner Nickki, “they’re all pretty popular.” Flavors include Lavender Honey, Caramelized Banana, Cookies and Cream, and Salted Caramel.
Nikki and her husband, Chef Todd, are pretty proud of Hugs ice cream because it truly is a family effort.
When our daughter went to art school in Savanna, she told us about the collaborative learning they were doing in college,” Nickki shared with me. “So the entire family got together and everyone put down 10 words that made them think about ice cream. We narrowed it down to “hugs.” Everybody loves hugs! The branding is the color purple because it is our daughter’s favorite color. That’s why it’s purple. Everything is family to us.
TJ’s Sandwich Shop has seriously delicious sandwiches. Whether you are a repeat customer, a college student studying in Fayetteville, a family from Bentonville coming down to shop and sightsee down the road, there is something for everyone.
Dad can have his sandwich, Mom can have her salad, and the kiddos can have the chicken chunks. But let me tell you, everyone has to have the Hugs.
