Years ago, when I was gluten-free, it was a challenge to find a spot to meet up that had gluten-free pastries. We usually went to Starbucks, and I would grab a cup of coffee while my friend chose a sweet treat. Every once in a while, there would be a gluten-free option or the occasional macaroon at some restaurant. I know, first-world problems. I always wondered why Northwest Arkansas did not have a macaron bakery like big cities.
I wasn’t the only one to wonder.
In the summer of 2015, Oliver Crumpton, his wife and his parents opened Alchemy Macarons in Fayetteville, on the ground floor of the EJ Ball Building, right off the square.
Oliver was a drummer in a heavy rock band, Spoken. As a touring musician, he loved exploring food places, including macaron shops worldwide. He felt like Northwest Arkansas needed one, so he worked on making those magical sweet meringue-based confections and opened Alchemy Macarons. The “alchemy” of making these delicate pastries is a process of transformation and creation.
Alchemy Macarons is a gorgeous shop that features French macarons. It’s almost like stepping into a fine jewelry store, except for the price tag.
You can purchase macarons in a flavor box of two, six or twelve. Or, if you want to sneak a quick treat, order one and savor it. I recommend a six-pack. Discounts are available for orders of sixty or more, so keep that in mind for your next special event.
Alchemy Macaroons offers 15 flavors of French macarons daily, filled with fine chocolate or house-made jams made from fresh fruit. I highly recommend the Razorback, which is made with red velvet cream. And try the classic pistachio, because it is a classic!
All macarons are preservative-free and naturally gluten-free. They are made with egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond meal and often food coloring.
Alchemy Macarons is also a fine tea house. Each loose-leaf offering is beautifully displayed with beautiful simplicity.
They will often have hot tea samples, so try before you buy. Who knows? You may discover a new passion for fine teas.
Specialty iced and hot teas are brewed and steeped once you order.
Be sure to check out the menu for specialty tea drinks. You can also go with a delicious cup of black or green tea.
