July 31 is National Avocado Toast Day, a real holiday that feels like it was invented by someone sipping an oat milk latte while journaling on their back patio. But hey, if that’s your vibe (or you’re trying to chase the macros), this is your sign to lean in.
Avocado Toast Day gives us a reason to indulge in that delightful combo of creamy green goodness on thick, crunchy bread. Whether you’re team “spicy chili crunch” or “lemon and microgreens,” there’s an avo toast variation for everyone, from college students snapping foodie pics to the Gen X brunch crew catching up after morning meetings.
I’ll admit it took me some time to warm up to avocado toast. At first, it seemed a bit too trendy. Who decided that guacamole should leave the chip bowl and show up at breakfast? But one bite of the perfect sourdough spread with creamy avocado, topped with sliced tomatoes, crunchy radish chips and a touch of heat… and yeah, I was sold.
At its core, avocado toast is simple:
It’s a choose-your-own-brunch adventure that combines healthy fats, fiber and flavor in every bite. (That’s what they mean by my umami bomb!)
Although avocado toast may seem like a contemporary food trend, its origins actually date back several years. Australians were spreading avocado on bread well before Instagram made it popular, and California’s health food scene helped it become a favorite in the U.S.
It gained popularity in the early 2010s due to its nutritious appeal, and it remained popular because of its visually appealing presentation on the plate, which made it an influencer’s eye candy.
But don’t dismiss it as just a trend. With a nutrient profile that includes healthy monounsaturated fats (the same kind found in olive oil), fiber, potassium, folate and vitamins like C, E, K and B6, it’s just as beneficial for your body as it is for your feed.
