Golden Kolache in Fayetteville

S

Start your day with a happy golden glow by visiting Golden Kolache Bakery on Wedington Drive in Fayetteville. They have some of the freshest, sweetest, and savory goodies around.

A famous breakfast/donut/goodies/kolaches hole-in-the-wall on Wedington Drive in Fayetteville is so nondescript and tucked back that you may miss it. Scratch that. It would be impossible to miss the waiting line of local folks who know it pays to be early and stand in line. Oh, wait, scratch that again. Because it would be even MORE impossible to miss friendly Steve, standing by the curb with his bright clothes and smile, waving “Hello!” and beckoning those driving by too, “Come on, come see us at Golden Kolache today!”

All I can say is to follow Steve’s advice.

Best Kolache shop in Fayetteville since 2018

A quick look at their website reveals that Golden Kolache Bakery has been acknowledged as a Neighborhood Favorite every year since 2018. You may remember their original location in Johnson, which opened in 2011. I would drive past that adorably painted little homestyle building and think, “Next time. I’ll stop by next time.”

Well, that “next time” never happened, and for years, I would drive by, and one day, it was gone. Little did I know then that it had simply moved its location to Wedington Drive in Fayetteville. That was back in the summer of 2015, and Golden Kolache Bakery has continued to build a loyal customer base.

While the new location may not have the outside charm of the Johnson location, what hasn’t changed is the incredible breakfast foods and exceptional customer service by the staff and owner, Isabella Milam.

Golden, mouth-watering treats

So, why is it called golden? And what in the world is a kolache?

First, one look at the pastries reveals immediately that they are bright golden in color. While not everything at Golden Kolache Bakery is a kolache, it’s only fitting that we take a minute to talk about kolaches. It’s in their name, after all!

Kolaches are a traditional Czech dessert. A kolache is singular, and kolaches are plural. So, when you stop by to grab a treat from Golden Kolache Bakery, the correct terminology when you ask for several is, “May I please have two kolaches?” Make that three.

A quick internet search explains that kolaches are one of the most popular pastries in Texas, brought by Czech immigrants. Traditionally, kolaches were a snack back in the old country and were typically made with a sweet yeast dough with a center-filled fruit.

At Golden Kolache Bakery, choose one of the traditional, fruit-filled kolaches. They are soft, sweet, and oh-so-perfect. The dough is springy and not too sweet.

Let’s eat!

The insider tip is to get there early because they run out of items as the morning goes on. That being said, the bakers do their best to keep an offering of delectable treats, so you honestly can’t go wrong, even if a few items are left when you arrive. You can call in or order online if you so choose, and they will do their best to set aside your request.

Let’s chat about a few of the menu items.

There are many savory breakfast options with meats, cheese, and gravy. I go simple with the Cheese Scrambler, buttery scrambled eggs mixed with sharp cheddar cheese and black pepper inside a yeasty bun. Delicious!

I recommend the Mushroom and Swiss if you want something even more savory. This is baby portabella mushrooms on a bun, sauteed with onions, garlic, serrano peppers, fresh cilantro, and Swiss cheese.

Or, if you’re looking for something a little lighter, try The Mediterranean, a sesame seed topped bun stuffed with feta, asiago, and cream cheese mixed with marinated artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, non-peril capers, green onions, rosemary, thyme, and basil.

If you’re looking for more sweets (beyond the fruit kolache), try the Lemon Zest or Orange Scone. Or try anything and everything! You won’t go wrong!!

Get in and out and leave with a smile.

I am not kidding about the staff and their excellent service. They are attentive, happy to serve and make recommendations, and love what they do. It shows in their food, which is one huge reason they are a neighborhood favorite.

Pop in, call in, order in, and be on your way. It’s a golden way to start a golden day.
