Honeywheat Bakery in Gentry

P

Pantry goods, homemade pastries and a sit-down deli all in one place? Count me in! If you’re looking for a tasty trifecta like this, check out Honeywheat Bakery in Gentry.

I love that towns throughout Northwest Arkansas are peppered with little foodie gems. Take, for instance, Honeywheat Bakery in Gentry, due west of Cave Springs. Local folks may remember the original location on Arkansas Highway 59 several years ago and wonder if they packed it up or moved to a new location.

Thankfully, Honeywheat Bakery has been alive, well, and thriving in its new location since June 2024 on Gentry’s charming downtown corner of Main Street. And when I say thriving, I mean THRIVING. Besides achieving the 2024 Business of the Year Award from the Gentry Chamber of Commerce, Honeywheat Bakery has a constant stream of loyal customers.

Amish-Owned and Run

Honeywheat Bakery is more than a bakery. Owned and operated by Miriam Yoder, the store offers baking goods, supplies, spices, sweets, freezer foods, fresh foods and a catering service (operated by Jenna Klassen).

Eat, then Shop

Yes, Honeywheat has a little bit of everything, so it’s easy to get overwhelmed when you first arrive. I found myself wondering if I should do some shopping first or order a sandwich from the deli.

I always recommend eating first because we all know what shopping on an empty stomach is like! Unless you have a huge bank account, because believe me, if you’re hungry, you’ll want to purchase a little bit of everything. The shop has a small eating area, which is quite cozy.

Let’s Eat!

If you’re eating in the bakery or taking food to go, you must go to the bakery counter and fill out a sandwich menu form.

You circle your options and drop them, face down, in the designated basket next to the form. There is also a salad form if you’re in the mood for salad!  When your order is ready, they’ll call your name (be sure to write it on the form).

There are many options: six bread choices, seven dressings, 13 meats, 11 cheese choices and seven toppings! The bread is baked fresh daily, and the cheese and meat are sliced every morning. (Tip: The Jalapeno Cheese Bread is a bestseller, so snag one if you see it because they go fast.)

Wherever you live in Northwest Arkansas, I suggest you jump in the car and make a beeline for one of their sandwiches. Although I am usually a half-sandwich gal, I’m all in for the entire sandwich with these sandwiches. They’re fresh and taste just like you always want a sandwich to taste: satisfying.

I recommend pastrami on rye bread with mayo, mustard, a slice of muenster and Gouda cheese. Oh, and be sure to add sliced cucumber as a topping. It’s delish!

There is a fresh foods refrigerator section if you want a salad with veggies on the side.

Let’s Shop!

After receiving your meal order, grab a handbasket or cart and start shopping while you wait. While the square footage isn’t massive, you’ll be delighted with all the available culinary offerings.

Honeywheat Bakery offers everything you would expect from an Amish market: cheeses, frozen foods, all-natural yogurts, whole milk, greens, jams, bulk spices, bulk grains, pasta and, well, just about anything else you can think of for baking goods and supplies.

Finish with a Treat.

Honeywheat Bakery is a bakery, so you won’t regret stopping by even for a treat.

I highly recommend the peanut butter brownie, a moist brownie with almost an inch of peanut butter on top, swirled with chocolate.

Everything is baked in the morning, ready for the lunch rush. With bread, muffins, brownies, cookies and more, you will want to go shopping, stay for lunch and leave with a treat.
