SMISHING: A FUNNY NAME FOR A SERIOUS THREAT
You’ve probably heard of phishing, where criminals try to obtain personal information with fraudulent emails. “Smishing” – short for “SMS phishing” – is the texting variation, and could show up as a message that appears to be from a business you trust. Including us. Protect yourself from fraud with these tips:
- THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK. Avoid clicking links within text messages, even from people you know. And especially from those you don’t.
- NEVER PROVIDE INFORMATION. Don’t respond to text messages that request private or financial information.
- CONTACT THE SENDER DIRECTLY. If you get a message that appears to be from your bank or other business entity, verify it in person or by phone before responding.
- NOTICE THE NUMBER. Beware of messages from “5000” or some other number that is not a cell number. Scammers often hide behind email-to-text services.
- BEWARE OF URGENCY. If a text message pressures you to act or respond quickly, remember that this is a common tactic for criminals.
- DON’T CALL. Never call a phone number from an unknown texter.
