In the heart of Little Rock’s Paul Laurence Dunbar School Neighborhood Historic District is Hearne Fine Art, a nationally-recognized gallery dedicated to African-American art. Founded in 1988, Hearne Fine Art strives to recognize and promote African-American art by featuring local, regional and national artists.
Garbo Hearne’s fascination with art began with her husband, Dr. Archie Hearne. Archie Hearne started collecting art in college when he lived with a professional artist who taught him the value and appreciation of art. After Garbo and Archie got married, she “caught the art bug” and hasn’t looked back since.
“I could do this for 100 years and still not show every artist that needs attention,” says Garbo Hearne.
Hearne Fine Art’s current exhibit “Landscapes Unmasked” runs Sept. 20 through Dec. 31. It features landscapes from the 19th century to today including works from Robert Duncanson, Edward Banister, Dean Mitchell and others including Arkansan Wade Hampton. The premise of this exhibition is to highlight a compilation of established and emerging African-American landscape artists.
One of Hearne’s featured artists is Pine Bluff native, Kevin Cole. Cole’s artwork has an underlying theme of neckties as symbols of power and hope. One of his pieces is featured in the new National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC. Because of her connection with Cole, Hearne was an invited guest to the preview of this new Smithsonian.
Little Rock artist Sylvester McKissick is another featured artist at Hearne Fine Art. His signature style is African-American folk art. This piece is part of a series on shotgun houses.
In addition to being a fine art dealer, Hearne is an independent bookseller, a custom picture framer, and certified art appraiser. Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing is located in the same building as Hearne Fine Art. Her selection of African-American authors is wide with books for children, youth and adults. Next door she has an auction house and sculpture garden.
Hearne often brings in artists and writers for events on site including children’s story time. For more about upcoming events, visit their website or Facebook page.
