MLK Weekend – Jan. 17-20

N

No matter your personality type or individual interest, there is always fun to be had each weekend in Arkansas. This MLK weekend you can cheer on the Razorbacks in an indoor track meet. You can catch the dueling pianos in El Dorado. You might take a little one to a fancy princess tea party at a castle or head to a museum to learn about dinosaurs. If you love the past, you can check out the event that Historic Washington State is hosting. Then on Monday, celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. at the many events around the state. Cheers to a weekend in Arkansas!

Arkansas Invitational (Fayetteville)

Track is back at the Randall Tyson Indoor Track! Head to Fayetteville for the first meet of the 2020 season as the Razorbacks race toward Championship number 47!

The first 200 fans will receive a FREE Arkansas Track and Field Water Bottle!

Dances of the Past  (Washington)

Dance experience is not required for this fun evening of dance and fellowship! Join the staff of Historic Washington for an exciting class that will leave you with unforgettable memories. Throughout history, dance has been not only an art form but also a way to socialize and make new friends. Come alone or with a partner and you will leave with new friends and new knowledge of dances such as the Virginia reel, and many more. Refreshments will be served and all will have fun. Casual dress or period dress as you like.

Dino Day: Celebrating “Dinosaurs: Fossils Exposed” Exhibit (Little Rock)

Dinosaurs will be taking over the Museum of Discovery this weekend! What better way to celebrate the opening of “Dinosaurs: Fossils Exposed,” the feature exhibit opening Saturday, January 18, than with a dino party complete with prehistoric activities and demos! “Dinosaurs: Fossils Exposed” explores the bones and fossils belonging to the giant creatures that once roamed the Earth. Visitors can view and even touch six full dinosaur skeletal molds including a Triceratops, Tyrannosaurs Rex and Velociraptor. There are additional molds of skulls, arms, legs, eggs, footprints and a 6-foot-1 Apatosaurus femur. Visitors will also enjoy a dig box where they can use paleontology tools to unearth dinosaur bones. The exhibit will remain at the museum until July 18 (date subject to change.)

Winter Tea Party (Little Rock)

The Snow Queen, The Ice Princess, and The Ice Cutting Man will be at the Castle on Stagecoach this weekend. Call and get your tickets for a tea party that features a  singalong and dance-along, with tea and treats, wands and tiaras, and photos with the characters.  Everything is included in the ticket price!

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrations Around the State

Monday we will commemorate the life, work and dreams of Dr. King. This day is more than a holiday, it is a wonderful opportunity to connect with our communities to celebrate the courageous sacrifice made by Dr. King in the name of equality and plan for a future that will far exceed his hopes and dreams.

MLK Challenge (Little Rock)

Mosaic Templars Cultural Center  (MTCC) is challenging YOU to honor Dr. Martin Luther King on Jan. 20, 2019, through participation in a day of service. Kids and teens ages 12-18 are encouraged to sign up and participate in this half-day of service. Volunteers will be divided into service groups, each with a group leader, and transported from MTCC to service sites. Volunteer duties will vary by site. Activities start at 8:30 a.m. at MTCC, and volunteers will return for lunch and discussion, to be completed by 3 p.m.

2020 AMLKC 2020 Day of Impact (Little Rock)

The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is excited for the 2020 King Holiday Day of Impact. The doors will open at noon and the program begins at 1:00 p.m. There will be a car show, bands, vendors, health and wellness screenings, free food, prizes and giveaways! Don’t miss out!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Little Rock Zoo)

Celebrate MLK Day at the zoo and honor a man who dedicated his life to making a better world. The Little Rock Zoo strives each day to work within its community, protect endangered wildlife and improve the future for all species – human and animal. You can search the Zoo for Dr. King’s quotes with a fun scavenger hunt, reflecting on his messages and the work you can do today! If you donate canned food items for the Arkansas Food Bank you can receive a discount on your family’s admission. (One discount per family)
