Piehouse Bakery in Bentonville

F

For years, I dreamed about the day someone would open a pie shop in Northwest Arkansas. It was a simple dream that made perfect sense. Of course, it would naturally be cozy and welcoming, with display cases filled with all types of gooey goodies.

When you make your next breakfast or lunch meetup plans with a friend, all you have to do is say, “Meet me at the Piehouse Bakery in Bentonville.”

Luckily for all of us, this dream came true, and you can find Piehouse Bakery in Bentonville, right next to the Peel House Museum.

An old-fashioned bakery

In October 2023, the Piehouse Bakery opened its doors, and the customers came flooding in. Those customers quickly became loyalists, and who can blame them? This is a bakery with a nod to the desserts many remember from days gone by – rhubarb pies, chocolate sheet cakes, and, let’s say, there is a reason why “pie” is in the bakery’s name!

The Piehouse Bakery owner, Lisa, apparently has baking pies and sweets in her DNA. She grew up on a dairy farm in rural Nebraska, where she learned to bake as a young girl. You’ll even find many recipes from her time growing up on the farm.

The first thing you’ll notice is the décor.

You thought I would say, “The first thing you’ll notice is the pie,” didn’t you? Don’t worry; we’ll get to that in a minute.

The décor is worth mentioning because the minute you pull up and walk through the welcoming front door and charming patio, you are entering the cozy zone.

The Piehouse Bakery is filled with delicious from-scratch pies, layer cakes, pastries, sweet bread and bread puddings, crisps, cobblers, and more. It is a cozy zone with nooks and crannies oozing, beckoning you to sit a spell and take it all in.

Fair warning: you may be so settled in and relaxed that you order seconds of dessert. I’m not saying that I did just that, but…

Let’s eat!

The Piehouse Bakery is a “true bakery and coffee shop with all the wonderful desserts of yesteryear.” The display cases are full of all sorts of baked goods, from scones, croissants, muffins, quiche, pies, icebox pies, savory pies, bread pudding, bars, brownies, tarts, quick breads, and Southern Layer Cakes.

See, it’s not all about pies! Although I highly recommend you start with a pie.

If the Strawberry Rhubarb is available, snag a slice. Or berry or sour cherry.

I recommend the Blackberry Custard Pie if you’re into icebox pies with a little bit of “extra” beyond sugar and fruit. And, of course, for just $1 extra, you can always go alamode with ice cream on the side.

Are you not feeling the sweets? Then go savory with a Chicken Pot Pie or a Shepherd’s Pie. They also have several quiche options, such as slice or whole. I highly recommend the Roasted Butternut Squash and Spinach Quiche. Have them warm it up for you!

Sometimes, nothing beats a slice of a glass of milk. For those times, belly up to the cake case and take your pick from a plethora of cake options: Vanilla with Buttercream Frosting, Ginger Slice, Carrot Cake, Old Fashioned Caramel, German Chocolate, Southern Lemon with Lemon Curd Filling, Angel Food, and more. Me? Please give me all the chocolate sheet cake!

Take it outside or get it to go.

The Piehouse Bakery has an outside patio when the weather is good (although, come on, who would want to leave the charm of the inside?!).

Best of all, they have a drive-through where you can order a slice of sweets.

There’s no excuse when you try to deny that sweet craving. Just make your way over to Piehouse Bakery in Bentonville.
