Arkansas Camping Gear Essentials

A

After years of camping all over Arkansas, in tents, in RVs, in the mountains, by the river and everywhere in between, I’ve learned a few things the hard way. We’ve done those trips where the car was packed to the brim with “just in case” items, and we’ve also had trips where we forgot things we actually needed. Somewhere along the way, we figured out what really matters and what can stay at home.

This guide is built from that experience. It’s not about bringing everything; it’s about bringing the right things so you can be comfortable and actually enjoy your trip. Because if you’ve camped in Arkansas for any length of time, you know it comes with a few quirks like heat, humidity, surprise rain and plenty of bugs.

Whether you’re pitching a tent or setting up at an RV site, these are the essentials that will help you camp smarter, pack lighter and have a whole lot more fun.

Staying Comfortable in Arkansas Weather

Camping in Arkansas usually means dealing with heat and humidity, especially from late spring through early fall. With temperature fluctuations come weather, so be prepared for it all.

  • Choose lightweight bedding and layers instead of heavy sleeping bags
  • A small fan to keep air moving inside your tent or camper
  • A tarp or rainfly setup for quick weather changes
  • A small inflatable kiddie pool

Bug Protection

Bugs are part of the Arkansas camping experience. Some parks are riddled with mosquitoes, while others have daddy long-legs covering every surface. And don’t forget the flies that seem to descend from miles around the moment you bring out the food!

To keep them from taking over:

  • Insect repellent is a must
  • Citronella candles or an electronic deterrent device can help around camp
  • A screened-in space or bug net is worth it if you’ll be outside after dark
  • Tabletop fans can keep bugs off the food

Simple Camp Kitchen Setup

You don’t need anything fancy to eat well at camp. In fact, simple is usually better. Many campgrounds provide a fire ring, but we have always found a small campstove to be useful. Prepping as much as you can in advance cuts down on what you need to bring.

  • A camp stove or grill
  • A cooler with plenty of ice
  • A few essential utensils (like tongs and a spatula) and a good knife
  • Easy cleanup supplies like paper towels and trash bags

For RV campers, you might have more built-in options, but there’s still something special about cooking and eating outside.

Lighting for Evenings and Early Mornings

Once the sun goes down, it gets dark fast, especially in more remote areas. Some campers bring an entire light display with them, but it’s not necessary, especially if you only plan to stay a night or two.

  • Lanterns for general lighting
  • Flashlights or headlamps for hands-free tasks
  • A string of twinkle lights for a little ambient lighting if you want to create a cozy space

The Little Comforts That Make a Big Difference

These aren’t must-haves, but they’re the things that turn a good trip into a great one.

  • Comfortable camp chairs
  • A hammock for relaxing in the shade
  • A small table for food prep or games
  • A mat or rug to keep dirt out of your space

A Few Safety Basics

Arkansas is beautiful, but it’s still the outdoors, and anything can happen. Being prepared just gives you peace of mind.

  • A basic first-aid kit
  • Plenty of drinking water or a way to filter it
  • A way to check the weather, especially during storm season
  • A simple plan if conditions change quickly

Arkansas-Made Camping Gear

One of my favorite things is finding gear that has ties right here in Arkansas. It’s not always easy to find local options in every category, but there are a few standout companies making really interesting and useful products.

FrazLabs (Little Rock)
This small Arkansas company makes rugged analog flashlights that are built to last. Their designs are simple and durable, which is exactly what you want when you’re camping.

JUNK Brands (Bentonville)
This Northwest Arkansas company makes high-performance hats and headbands that are surprisingly useful for camping. They help manage sweat, offer a little sun protection and can make those hot, humid days more comfortable.

Dozier Knives (Springdale) and WK Forgeworks (Prairie Grove)
Both of these Arkansas makers produce high-quality knives designed for real outdoor use. For campers, a well-made knife can come in handy for simple tasks like food prep or small gear fixes. These are more of an investment, but they’re built to last.

Camping in Arkansas doesn’t require a ton of gear. In fact, keeping things simple usually leads to the best trips.

Focus on staying cool, keeping the bugs under control and making your space comfortable. Add in a few thoughtful extras, and you’ve got everything you need to enjoy your time outside.
