We are off to the races with opening day at Oaklawn Park and dazzled as Cinderella dances at the ball. You can celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., hunt for that treasured vintage find or enjoy a couple of concerts.
The Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission hosts Mega Kingfest 2017
Established in 1993, the Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr Commission is an offspring of the Martin Luther King Federal Holiday Commission and was established under then Governor Bill Clinton by executive order. The commission works to celebrate and extend the legacy of MLK by advocating and providing opportunities for youth within Arkansas. Their signature event, Mega Kingfest, is the summation of all of their values. This year’s keynote speakers include 90s sensation Kel Mitchell, Disney Channel star Skai Jackson, Miss Arkansas 2016, and retired educator & activist Annie Abrams. Croce: Two Generations of American Music – Fayetteville
Known for his boogie-woogie piano playing reminiscent of Dr. John, A.J. Croce is a multi-instrumentalist, roots-rock artist whose exploratory music incorporates pop, blues, folk and jazz. The son of legendary singer-songwriter Jim Croce, A.J.’s unique jazz piano and blues-tinged voice have established him as a singular artistic force. Now, he takes the stage for a performance that features classics by his father including timeless songs like “Operator,” “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim,” and “Workin’ At the Car Wash Blues”, some of his own tunes, and songs that influenced them both.

Oaklawn Racing Opening Day 2017 – Hot Springs

Guitar Trio – Batesville
Producer Danny Dozier announced the next show in the “Concerts in the Loft” series. Finger Food, an instrumental guitar concert series features Steve Davison, Micky Rigby and Danny Dozier. This concert series includes complimentary beverages and hors d’oeurves. Daniel Haney will open the show. The Concerts in the Loft are fundraisers to help continue with the construction of Maxfield Park in historic downtown Batesville and donations are accepted. Opening the show for Finger Food will be guitarist Daniel Haney.
