Imagine stepping back over 500 years and experiencing a simpler and more primitive form of travel. Constructed only with tools available 500 years ago, these beautiful ships are a testimony to the craftsmanship of ship builders past and present.
As you step aboard and feel the gentle rocking of the water under your feet, you are awed by the graceful lines of the ships. Looking over the bow, you imagine men, with only the supplies stowed aboard, facing the horizon and an uncertain destination. With an endless sea ahead, you are struck by how very small these ships are in comparison to the great expanse.
These replica ships were built in Valencia, Brazil by Portuguese shipwrights that have passed on traditional methods for eight generations. Eleven months out of the year, these ships sail from port to port, bringing history to cities across the North American continent.
You can actually experience stepping aboard history! The Nina and the Pinta will be docked at 4831 Riverfront Drive in Fort Smith along the Arkansas River from October 24th through November 2nd. They offer unguided tours for individuals or guided tours for groups of fifteen or more.
This is an awesome educational experience for students! The guided tours tell what life was like aboard a 15th century Caravel, how the ships worked, what the crew ate, how they lived and much more. For individuals, you can tag along with a guided tour, or walk the ships at your own pace, reading the informational signs strategically placed throughout the tour.
School groups of fifteen or more are welcome and need to call ahead and reserve a time slot. Individuals can come during school hours but are also welcome after school and on weekends when it is less crowded.
General Admission:
$8.00 for adults
$7.00 for seniors (age 60+)
$6.00 age 5-16 (not in a school group)
Age 4 and under are free
Group & School Tours:
Minimum of 15 people, $5 per person
Hours: 9am to 6pm except Nov-Dec 9am to 5pm
