First Cidery in Arkansas ~ Black Apple Crossing

I

In an unassuming space on the backside of the quaint Gingiber store front is something pretty special. Black Apple Crossing is Arkansas’ first cidery, offering adult beverages fermented on-site using simple ingredients: apples and spices. Emma Avenue in Springdale is experiencing a revitalization, and the investment by new businesses like Gingiber, Roustabout Boutique and, to boost nightlife, Black Apple Crossing is fueling this change.

National brand adult ciders are a popular option these days. Certainly, one benefit of these ciders over beer is that they are gluten-free, but for folks who don’t like beer, cider offers a tasty alternative to heavier drinks. The mild sweetness of apples pairs perfectly with natural spices for a refreshing beverage during the heat of summer that transitions seamlessly into the cooler evenings of fall.

As of September 2015, Black Apple Crossing offers four cider options. Don’t worry if you don’t know what you want, just get a flight and try them all:

  • Dry Guy: The least sweet of the options, this cider is perfect for those who prefer a more savory drink.
  • Spice of Life: This spicy, sweet drink is served with cinnamon and sugar on the rim, a popular choice as the days turn cooler.
  • Imperial Carino: My personal favorite, the Imperial Carino is sweet, but not too sweet.
  • Bellini: The Bellini cider offers a bright, effervescent taste. It is the Champagne of ciders.

While they do not serve food themselves, Black Apple Crossing is partnering with small businesses to provide a meal with their cider. Taqueria Don Guero (a popular spot on the Springdale Taco Tour) is just across the street and will deliver to the cidery. Tyler’s Craft BBQ food truck serves tasty food Thursday evenings. If you just want a snack, they do have fresh-popped popcorn available.

The beautiful, private patio outside of the bar is a wonderful spot to meet friends and enjoy a pleasant evening. Have a drink at the stunning indoor bar or bring your group to the intimate room just off the bar space to play a board game. Be sure to follow Black Apple Crossing’s facebook page to keep up with special events, like live music, happening in historic Downtown Springdale.
