Cooking With Kids for Christmas

The Christmas season provides great opportunities for Arkansas families to make memories together. Some of my favorite memories, both as a child and as a mom, were made in the kitchen preparing all of those wonderful dishes. There’s nothing quite like the closeness of gathering around a mixing bowl whipping up something special to eat and enjoy with your kids. In honor of Christmas, and children, we’ve gathered some fun recipes that your children can help you prepare and will love eating. We’ve also included a recipe to make those classic dough Christmas ornaments. All of these recipes and many more can be found in the ‘Penny’s Picks’ section of the ‘What’s Cookin’ at First Security Cookbook’. Take time to gather in the kitchen with your family and make some memories that will last a lifetime.

MAGIC REINDEER FOOD

Prep Time: 1 hour
Servings: 25 cups

FS OIA Dec Christmas cooking with kids ingredients

Ingredients:

  • Two (24 ounce) packages vanilla almond bark
  • 3 cups mini pretzels
  • 12 ounce can cocktail peanuts
  • 12 ounce box Rice Krispies cereal
  • 14.25 ounce box Cheerios cereal
  • 16 ounce package chocolate chip morsels
  • Christmas-colored sugar sprinkles

Instructions to Make Rudolph’s Favorite Dish:

  1. In a large, microwave-safe glass bowl, place almond bark broken into squares.
  2. Microwave on high for 2 ½ minutes, or until melted, stirring once.
  3. Combine pretzels, peanuts, and cereal in a large bowl.
  4. Pour melted almond bark over mixture and toss to coat.
  5. Stir in chocolate chip morsels.
  6. Spread mixture onto wax paper and sprinkle with Christmas-colored sugar sprinkles.
  7. Let stand 30 minutes, or until set.

GOLDEN NORTH POLE NUGGETS

Prep Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 2 dozen

Ingredients:

  • 10-ounce package peanut butter morsels
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 ½ cups thin pretzel sticks
  • 6-ounce package plain fish-shaped crackers

Instructions for Mrs. Claus’ Favorite Recipe:

  1. In a large, microwave-safe glass bowl, combine peanut butter morsels and shortening.
  2. Microwave on high for about 2 ½ minutes or until melted, stirring once.
  3. Add pretzels and fish crackers and gently stir to coat.
  4. With a tablespoon, drop mixture onto wax paper.
  5. Let stand until it doesn’t jiggle.
  6. Enjoy a holly joggle Christmas treat.

CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT MIX

Prep Time: 1 – 2 hours
Ornaments: 10 – 15

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups salt
  • Water
  • Christmas cookie cutters
  • Christmas ornament hangers
  • Paint and decorations

Instructions:

  1. Mix flour and salt together.
  2. Add water, a little at a time, and stir until your mixture is the consistency of pie dough.
  3. Roll out on lightly floured surface to ¼ to ½ inch thickness.
  4. Cut with Christmas cookie cutters.
  5. Add ornament hangers to cut shapes.
  6. Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  7. On a cookie sheet, bake until light brown.
  8. Gently remove from cookie sheet and allow to cool.
  9. Decorate.
  10. Hang on Christmas tree.
  11. To store, wrap and put in tight fitting storage container. (Mice do like them.)
