Cabot has a dynamite food truck. The name is Cook’s Hook, and I highly recommend checking it out. The menu is turkey-centric, which is somewhat of an interesting twist, given that it’s often an afterthought outside of Thanksgiving. I love turkey, so I’m happy the folks at Cook’s Hook have embraced the protein.
Expect a different sandwich special each week with options like the Turkey Pastrami Melt, Smoked Turkey Salad, and Tennessee BBQ Turkey. I recently tried the Fried Turkey Po’Boy with deep-fried pieces of turkey, slaw, and a creamy Dijon dressing on a hoagie roll. While satisfying, thanks in large part to the crispy turkey, my Turkey Cheesesteak from a previous visit is a sandwich that needs to work its way back on the menu. Cook’s has successfully executed their spin on the Philadelphia classic by ditching the thinly sliced ribeye in favor of turkey. A heavy hand of melted cheese, grilled bell peppers and onions all reside on a perfectly-toasted hoagie roll. Each bite has a subtle crunch, making the handheld an irresistibly good one.
Each sandwich comes with one side. Make sure to get the gooey macaroni and cheese. This is not a knock on other options like the fries, ranch-style beans, or potato salad, but mac is the star. The side also travels surprisingly well.
Cook’s Hook does an excellent job with desserts. Much like the turkey sandwich, you should expect a different Southern-style option each week. My last visit coincided with Chocolate Walnut Double-Layered Sheet Cake week. Instead of devouring the fudgy-iced hunk of cake in the front seat of my ride, I resisted temptation and drove the meal-ender back to Little Rock, where it found a home in my fridge for the next several hours. I love cold cake, and that’s exactly the way to eat this one, although you may disagree. To each his or her own. If this cake was any indication, I’m guessing the truck does a top-notch job with all desserts.
Fried fish is also on the menu, and while I love the ever-popular catfish that’s pretty much found everywhere in Arkansas, I applaud Cook’s for again switching it up with wild-caught Alaskan pollock. It came with a well-seasoned breading, but unfortunately, the fish didn’t reach a level of crispiness that would have elevated the dish to must-order status. Maybe next time. There will most certainly be a next time for me, and I am hoping for a first time for you.
Keep an eye on Cook’s Hook’s social media, as they do an excellent job of keeping prospective customers up-to-date on where they are located in Cabot and what is on the menu. I have a sneaking suspicion that you’ll enjoy the food as much as I have.
