Southern Food Company in Fayetteville

S

Southern Food Company is an upscale diner that serves an incredible breakfast with lunch and dinner on the side. Did I mention breakfast?

Nouveau Southern Cuisine

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear “Southern Cuisine?” Fried foods with fat dripping off of them? Food that pretty much all looks the same color of fried beige? Or perhaps an image of mushy green beans?

Let me introduce you to Nouveau Southern Cuisine at the Southern Food Company in Fayetteville. This upscale diner (but not stuffy!) is centrally located on Wedington Drive.

Owners Todd and Marti love Fayetteville (they first met at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville!) and opened Southern Food Company in 2017. You may already be familiar with the couple’s South by Northwest Hospitality group of local Fayetteville-based restaurants:  East Side Grill and Theo’s in Fayetteville and Rogers.

Their take on “Nouveau”—aka “new”—southern cuisine is not the overly fried and mushy meals that dot the landscape all over the South. They emphasize fresh, everyday food with a “mix of regional experiences from around the Southern U.S.” So. At the same time, menu items have a familiarity that you may have experienced in your Mamaw’s kitchen, the food at Southern Food Company is fresh, healthy, and brimming with incredible spices.

Bring on the breakfast

If you’re like me, I’m always looking for a comfy, cozy breakfast spot! Food is all handmade and prepped daily by the staff. Portions are large, and you can quickly tell there is pride in what they prepare and cook.

The breakfast/brunch menu at Southern Food Company (or SFC, as locals call it) is extensive. You can choose from build-your-own sides, Lox and Bagel, Avocado Toast, Loaded Waffles, Biscuit sammies, Breakfast Hash, or Steak and eggs. The Weekend Brunch menu adds extra menu items and is worth the visit.

I could eat just about anything on the menu and will most likely work my way through it over time.

If it’s your first or one-hundredth time, always get a biscuit. Or start with ordering the SFC Eggs Benedict, which comes with their incredibly delicious buttermilk biscuits, spinach, chicken (grilled or fresh), sunny-side-up eggs, and an out-of-this-world jalapeno hollandaise sauce.

They had me with jalapeno hollandaise sauce.

And biscuit.

And fried chicken.

And runny egg.

The main menu items for breakfast and brunch are served with fresh fruit or breakfast potatoes. You can spend a little more and add a yogurt parfait or grits. In fact, ask your server about vegetarian options that are not listed on the menu. The kitchen will be happy to accommodate your needs!

More than a breakfast spot

Perhaps you’re not really into breakfast as much as I am. It’s okay; we can still be friends. Southern Food Company stays open from breakfast through lunch and all through dinner, so there is something for everyone!

Lunch and Dinner menu offerings include sandwiches, tacos, BYO burgers, starters, soups, and salads. Dinner plates include bread and a side salad, and you will want to check out their hand-pounded and scratch-made-batter Salisbury Steak (aka Chicken Fried Steak). This is a half-pound hamburger steak topped with brown gravy, mushrooms, and your choice of two sides.

Stop in and stay awhile

You can pop in any time of the day for Onyx coffee and a freshly made pastry. Want to meet up for a drink with friends? They also have an extension bar menu, and the SFC Bloody Mary is not made from a mix!

Counter service is provided during the day on weekdays, and table service is provided at night and on weekends. While waiting on your order, stroll around the room and take in the local artwork on display (and for sale). They’ll even ship prints for you.

At the end of the day, the middle of the day, or the beginning of the day, Southern Food Company in Fayetteville is a must-visit spot on your dining list.

There’s a reason why it is listed on Yelp’s top ten best southern food in Fayetteville.
