The Arkansas Razorbacks split the defensive end role into two positions in defensive coordinator Ron Roberts’ defense.
At the more traditional end spot, the Hogs boast all-conference and perhaps All-America candidate Quincey Rhodes (6-6, 273) as a returner at the position.
Rhodes played well enough last year as a junior, with 15.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks, to consider taking his services to the NFL. He would have been drafted, but once he learned Ryan Silverfield was moving from Memphis to be the Hogs’ head coach, he opted to stay.
Silverfield was the first coach to offer him a college scholarship before he ultimately chose to be a Razorback.
While Rhodes’ experience will no doubt come in handy for the Razorbacks, the techniques and schemes employed by Roberts are quite different from the ones Rhodes grew accustomed to in his first three years with the Hogs.
Xadavian Sims (6-3, 308), a transfer from Oregon, worked behind Rhodes in the spring.
Opposite Rhodes at end, Roberts deploys a hybrid linebacker/end type at the Jack position. It is a pass-rushing position, but it has run responsibility. The player also has to be versatile enough to cover the tight end.
Junior Charlie Collins (6-5, 233), Kentucky transfer Stephen Soles (6-2, 237) and Auburn transfer Jamonte Waller (6-0, 237) are the top three candidates to play the most at the spot. Collins was leading the pack in the spring, but the competition will continue in preseason camp.
