Arkansas Drive-Ins and Dairy Bars

T

There’s something truly special about a summer visit to a dairy bar or drive-in. The sizzle of a burger cooking on the grill, the swirl of soft-serve ice cream towering above a cone, and the tang of a homemade cherry limeade bring back memories of family road trips, lake weekends and lazy afternoons in small-town Arkansas. Whether you’re heading to the water or just craving a taste of nostalgia, Arkansas’s classic dairy bars and drive-ins offer delicious slices of Americana.

What Is a Dairy Bar, Anyway?

A dairy bar isn’t your typical fast-food spot. These walk-up or drive-up stands serve comfort food with character, like hand-spun milkshakes, homemade burgers, footlong hot dogs, and classic fries. You usually order at the window, eat at a picnic table, or take your food to go. It’s casual, straightforward, and totally charming.

Arkansas is a haven for vintage dairy bars, many of which have remained unchanged since their opening in the 1950s and ’60s. It turns out, we’re full of retro charm.

And what’s the difference between a dairy bar and a drive-in? While both evoke mid-century roadside culture, drive-ins usually allow you to order from your car and dine there with tray service. Dairy bars typically ask you to step up to a window and maybe find a seat under a striped awning or at a red bench outside.

Either way, you’re in for a treat.
