Faby’s in Conway is Fabulous

A

After two trips to Faby’s in the heart of downtown Conway at 1023 Front Street, this much is certain: there is a lot to like about the food. Oddly, the menu is Mexican food heavy, but you will also find several Italian plates. And while I cannot yet vouch for the latter, I can tell you much of the former is fabulous.

That includes the taco salad, a beautiful fried flour tortilla bowl filled with shredded chicken (you also have a choice of ground beef), guacamole, tomatoes, shredded cheddar, and sour cream. I gobbled up the entire thing, shell and all. You also cannot go wrong with any of Faby’s tacos – just make sure to request the house-made flour tortillas when picking out the protein. To me, these tortillas are what separate Faby’s from 95% of the other Mexican food restaurants in this area. Thin, soft and with just a subtle amount of charred spots, these tortillas are best when filled with tender chunks of Asada (beef).

The Pollo Sabroso, a plate of chargrilled chicken cutlets covered in a thin cheese sauce, is not to be missed. Just as impressive as the chicken are the accompanying sides of rice and beans. Dare I say this was some of the very best Tex-Mex-style rice that I have eaten? I swear that is not hyperbole. It has such a soft, pillowy texture and a mild flavor that paired well with just about anything on the table, and that included a spoonful of Faby’s warm, smokey salsa.

Lovers of avocado will definitely want to try out Faby’s fried avocado option. It’s stuffed with cheese and chicken, then battered and deep-fried to a golden brown. Once it hits the table just slice it down the center and watch all of the gooey cheese ooze out. Fried avocados like this one do not show up on a lot of menus nowadays. Maybe it is a lost art.

Do you see a theme here?

Every dish is one that I would not only eat again but highly recommend to others. However, given Faby’s expansive menu, I am tempted to keep trying new items. I have my eye on the chile relleno and tamales for my next visit.

If you are stopping in (or ordering takeout) during lunch, please make sure to check out the 22-item lunch menu that runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Monday through Friday. Its prices range from $6.50-$8.50 and include dishes like the aforementioned taco salad, as well as items like burritos, enchiladas, tortas, and even huevos rancheros.

As for the Italian side of the menu? I imagine if I actually lived in Conway, I would have already partaken in a few dishes. Faby’s Mexican food is just so good, though, making it almost impossible for me to stray to the other side.

Something tells me I will, eventually.

Wow! Great article on my favorite restaurant! The food is always awesome and the staff is out of this world! They serve a complimentary cup of soup and Mondays are usually Tomato Basil Soup days. Mmmmm so good.
