After School Trips to The Little Rock Zoo

W

When my kids were toddlers, I would join the Little Rock Zoo every year because it was so easy to get my money’s worth out of it as a stay-at-home mom of preschoolers. But once they started school, I kind of stopped going and let my membership lapse.

Then on one of the many Monday holidays at school, my kids begged me to take them to the zoo. On a whim, I decided to join again because I realized that I only had to come once more for it to be worth it. I was pleasantly surprised by how much we used our membership that year.

Our favorite time to go was right after school. I would pack a snack in the car and we would head over there straight from the pick-up line.

We would arrive for the last hour that the zoo was open, which would also mean it was practically empty. We had it all to ourselves.

Our first stop was always the penguins. My youngest and I can sit and watch them swim for a long time.

In fact, sometimes when the older kids had extra activities at school, my youngest and I would head over to the zoo just the two of us.

Little Rock Zoo - After School

I have four children, so I really treasure any one-on-one time I can get with each of them.

One day Simon brought a notebook along and spent the afternoon sitting and drawing the animals.

He was very serious about this project, which I found to be precious. It was a gorgeous day and I loved getting to sit outside in the sun with him and the animals.

Little Rock Zoo in the afternoon

It’s wonderful to have a place to let the kids run after school before settling in for the evening with homework, dinner and baths. And there’s something about a trip to the zoo that never grows old for kids and adults alike.

The Little Rock Zoo is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults and $9 for children. A family membership is $85 for a year.
