This signature event raises money for the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas, which exists to promote philanthropy among women and to help women and girls achieve their full potential. Every October, Power of the Purse brings in funds that will then be given out as grants – to women who are helping other women and girls.
It’s more than just an event, however. The women involved with Power of the Purse feel a passionate connection to it. Amy Pierce, a former WFA board member, explained it to me this way:
“What I love most of the Power of the Purse is that it is an opportunity to celebrate the women of Arkansas and reinforce the message of philanthropy by women for women. The luncheon also provides a platform to hear what the WFA has done during the past year.
“The luncheon … gives a forum to learn more about the issues confronting women today and/or their needs; to recognize you are a part of a large community of women committed to helping other women achieve their goals…all concerned with improving the well-being of women in Arkansas. If you haven’t attended, you should. It’s a wonderful event.
“One of the biggest reasons I love the WFA is the inspiring women from all across Arkansas that I’ve met and/or learned about at the lunch. Women make a difference in their community every day and do it to improve the world around them for the next generation. This is one of the few events that recognizes these awesome ladies and shows what their an impact their time, treasure, and talents have made on the world.”
Natalie Ghidotti, a Little Rock public relations consultant who has attended the event, sums it up like this: “I’ve been several years. For me, it’s the power of all that power – I am woman, hear me ROAR – in one room. Pretty awesome!”
Past speakers have included Abigail Disney, documentary filmmaker; Jennifer Buffet, daughter of Warren Buffet and co-president of NoVo Foundation, and Dee Dee Myers, President Clinton’s former press secretary. This year’s keynote will be given by Sharon Orlopp, Global Chief Diversity Officer and Senior Vice President at Walmart.
The Women’s Foundation of Arkansas will hold the 16th annual Power of the Purse luncheon on Friday, October 3, 2014, at the Statehouse Convention Center’s Wally Allen Ballroom in Little Rock.
This year’s honoree for Woman of the Year in Philanthropy is Catherine Hughes, a longtime philanthropist and a founding member of WFA. For the first time, this year an outstanding philanthropic organization will also be recognized – the Little Rock Chapter of The Links, Inc.
Luncheon tickets are $100/person and $1,000/Table of 10.
