Thanksgiving to me is about turkey, dressing, praline sweet potato casserole, garlic cheese grits, Grandma’s deviled eggs and desserts like pumpkin cobbler, pecan pie and, of course, canned cranberry sauce. It is also about family, friends and football, but most of all, it is about taking time to be grateful and to remember. It’s a time when we meet up with family we rarely get to see and an opportunity to invite friends for a Friendsgiving, a time when we talk about the past and share memories of days gone by and the people who are no longer at the table but made us who we are. We laugh a lot, and there may be a few tears, but most of all, we are grateful.
Not everyone is excited to bring out their favorite cookbooks and spend the day (or days leading up to it) in the kitchen. Or, maybe the family cook is ready for a break this year. Then, it’s time to switch things up… pile up the crew and take them to one of these Arkansas restaurants open on Thanksgiving Day. I highly recommend that you call and confirm hours and then make reservations if you can. It will be one of the busiest days of the year for most restaurants.

For the fifth year, Verona Italian Restaurant, 190 Skyline Drive, Conway, will be sharing “with those in need,” serving turkey, stuffing, gravy and salad “at no cost for anyone in our community who can’t be with family or can’t afford to prepare it at home … until we run out,” on Thanksgiving Day from 1 to 3 p.m.

Catalpa Cafe & General Store in Oark will be hosting their annual free Thanksgiving dinner again this year. Everyone is welcome; donations are optional. Doors open at 11 a.m., and they will serve until they run out. Reservations are not needed, but RSVP is appreciated, especially if you are a large family or group, to ensure they make enough food.
