Read More about this safari issue.Nothing is more universally loved than a good sandwich, an item that spans the globe with just about every cuisine imaginable showcasing infinite varieties. Here in Arkansas, we have some amazing options. Below are my eight favorite sandwiches around Arkansas, followed by 20 reader suggestions collected from my personal blog, The Mighty Rib.
Separately, the ingredients won’t overwhelm you, but combine the bialy with cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers, mixed greens, tomato and red onion and you’ve got pure magic. Boulevard Bread Company does several great sandwiches, but this one tops the chart.
Sometimes less is more, like at Courseys where house-smoked, thinly sliced turkey and cheddar on run-of-the-mill white bread with mayonnaise form one of the most amazing sandwiches in all of Arkansas. Just make sure you order a few for the road. And don’t forget about the smoked bacon.
Newsflash, I really like smoked turkey, and Burge’s in Little Rock does a great job with their simple Smoked Turkey Melt. The thick-cut slabs of turkey are combined with crisp bacon, lettuce and good old-fashioned American cheese, yielding a sandwich that’s simple and satisfying.
Charlotte’s signature sandwich includes smoked turkey, tomato, onion, avocado and Monterey Jack on sourdough. This concoction is then dipped in a rich, Parmesan garlic cream and grilled. The crispy grilled Parmesan exterior is pure joy, as is their regionally famous pie.
Every single Arkansan should make their way to Jones Bar-B-Q in Marianna at least once. This James Beard Award-Winning treasure has a limited menu, but what they do, they do quite well. This includes the pulled pork sandwich with a subtly tangy slaw on white bread. Just make sure to arrive early, as Jones usually sells out in a few hours.
While I’m pushing the boundaries of what’s technically considered a sandwich, I thought the inclusion of Saiwok’s Smoked Pork Belly Steam Bun on this list is justified. The soft bun is mild in flavor but acts as a perfect, foldable canvas for pickled vegetables, meats and slaw. As for the pork belly, it is an ideal balance of sweet and salty.
I don’t claim to be an expert on many things, but I do know a dynamite Club sandwich when I taste one, and Pea Farm Bistro in Cabot serves the best I’ve come across in Central Arkansas. The massive sourdough bread sandwich is filled with a plentiful amount of sliced smoked turkey and ham, as well as bacon, Swiss, mayo, lettuce and tomato.
The Ridgewood Brothers BBQ truck in Russellville has burst upon the Arkansas barbecue scene with its fan favorite, Texas-style brisket, but one of the unsung gems is the pulled pork sandwich. A ball of super moist meat is drenched in sauce and piled on a potato bun.
