Last year, I shared 10 Ways to Survive an Arkansas Snowstorm, but this year, let’s focus on something even more common—those icy ‘Arctic Blasts’ that hit every winter. While snow in Arkansas can be rare, freezing temperatures and cold snaps are guaranteed. Inspired by a reader suggestion (thank you, Sally Quick!), I’ve put together these essential tips for surviving an Arkansas cold snap—no snow required, just plenty of layers and preparation.
When the temperatures in Arkansas dip below freezing, it’s time to embrace the chilly weather and make the most of it! From outdoor adventures to cozy indoor activities, the Natural State has something for everyone, even when it’s frosty outside. Here are some fun and lighthearted ideas to keep you entertained during the cold snaps:
What better way to warm up than soaking in the natural thermal springs in Hot Springs, Arkansas? Relax in the soothing waters and let the steam chase away the winter chill. Bonus: it’s a perfect opportunity to indulge in some spa treatments too!
Yes, you read that right! Winter hikes can be magical. Head to trails like Whitaker Point or Pinnacle Mountain to experience breathtaking frost-covered landscapes. Dress in layers, pack some snacks and enjoy a new experience on a favorite hiking trail.

It doesn’t always get cold enough for waterfalls to freeze in Arkansas, but when it does, it’s a spectacular sight. Check out some of these popular Winter Waterfalls across Arkansas.

Escape to a rustic cabin in the Ozarks or Ouachitas. Stoke up the fireplace, sip on some mulled cider, and watch the snow (or frost) fall outside. It’s the ultimate way to recharge and embrace the season – especially during a cold snap.
On those particularly frigid days, step indoors and enjoy the stunning art collections at Crystal Bridges in Bentonville. Brave the outdoors and wander the grounds at the Historic Arkansas Museum.
Visit a local diner or café to savor Arkansas’s comfort foods. Chit, Chat and Chew Cafe in Searcy is one of our favorite places to visit when we get a snow day. A giant pancake or a plate of biscuits and gravy will warm you from the inside out. Don’t forget dessert—their cheesecake is out of this world!
Capture the beauty of winter with your camera. Frosty mornings, frozen waterfalls, and snow-dusted forests make Arkansas a photographer’s paradise. Don’t forget to wear gloves that work with touchscreens! Check out the Photography Tip Series from local photographer Ashel Parsons for all kinds of tips and tricks.

Arkansas’s scenic byways, like the Pig Trail or Mount Magazine Scenic Byway, offer stunning views year-round. In winter, the frost-tipped trees and icy rivers create an entirely new perspective. Bring a playlist and a thermos full of hot cocoa for the ride. Check out these scenic drives.
When there’s a cold snap, channel your inner baker. Whip up a batch of Arkansas’s famous chocolate gravy and serve it over warm biscuits. It’s a delicious way to spend a chilly afternoon. Here are a few more of our favorite sweet treats:
Note: If you get really good at making chocolate gravy, you may want to enter the World Championship Chocolate Gravy Cookoff held in Searcy each May!
Winter doesn’t typically arrive in Arkansas until January or February, well after the seasonal skating rinks at many holiday displays have closed. But don’t let that spoil your fun! Roller skating is making a comeback, and it’s a great indoor activity when it is cold outside. Whether you’re gracefully gliding or hilariously wobbling, it’s a surefire way to have a blast.
The Winter Olympics come to Italy this March. It may be too late to make the team, but from curling to figure skating and even ice hockey, there are plenty of ways in Arkansas to experience some of the winter sports you’ll be watching in March 2026.
When all else fails, sometimes, the best way to enjoy fa cold snap is to stay inside and get lost in a good book. Choose a classic novel, a thrilling mystery, or a heartwarming story—and don’t forget to pair it with a warm blanket and a cup of tea or coffee.
Winter in Arkansas might not bring the deep snow drifts of the North, but it’s still full of charm and adventure. Whether you’re exploring the great outdoors or staying cozy inside, there’s no shortage of fun things to do when the temperatures drop below freezing. Bundle up, get creative, and enjoy all the Natural State has to offer!
