Spring break is on the horizon. My son will be off from school, and my husband and I will get a little break from our teaching jobs. I love teaching, but being a mom is the most amazing job I have. Unfortunately, motherhood doesn’t provide vacation time, and sometimes, you need a break.
A solo weekend away is just what the doctor ordered. Just me, myself and a little slice of peace and tranquility. I probably can’t escape to a tropical paradise or anywhere far away, but living in central Arkansas means there is natural beauty and hidden gems right around the corner. A solo weekend of rejuvenation is just a short drive away.
Where to Find Your Bliss
- Embrace the Outdoors: Escape the hustle and bustle of laundry and sibling squabbles with some time in nature. Visit stunning waterfalls and hiking trails, or go birding. If you’re feeling adventurous, try kayaking on the Buffalo River near Jasper or explore some of Arkansas’s geological wonders and unique rock formations.
- Charming Getaways: Craving quaint towns with small-town charm? Eureka Springs offers Victorian architecture, unique shops and a cool underground. For a dose of history and Southern hospitality, head to Hot Springs, known for its bathhouses and gangster hideouts. Mountain View and the Ozark Folk Center are the perfect spots for folk music lovers or those who love to channel their inner Laura Ingalls Wilder.
- Lake Life Bliss: Is serenity by the water your jam? Pick your lake for a unique Arkansas beach getaway! Lake Ouachita is Arkansas’s largest lake. Lake Catherine boasts stunning scenery, fishing and water sports. Beaver Lake is perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, and simply soaking up the sun. Greers Ferry Lake has history, quiet camping spots and the best chocolate cake.

- Explore at Your Pace: Wander through art galleries, museums, or antique shops. Take a self-guided tour through a historic town or lose yourself in the beauty of a botanical garden.
- Savor Local Flavors: It’s time to treat your taste buds and let someone else do the cooking! Nearly every town and neighborhood boasts some fabulous restaurants. Don’t forget to grab a scoop of local ice cream for an afternoon treat!

Pack your bags, hop in the car, and escape to your own slice of Arkansas paradise. I highly recommend a solo trip, but you can always bring a friend or your significant other. Just take time to take care of yourself. You deserve it!
